..Self Publish, Be Naughty..

..Self Publish, Be Naughty.. both reflects and emulates a new form of sexual identity, in which categories such as “straight”, “gay” and “bisexual” are irrelevant..

...Behind the Curtains of
21ST Century Communism...

...A Maoist rebel soldier wearing a Britney Spears t-shirt stands among a battalion of other soldiers of the People's Liberation Army during a drill in a schoolyard in the village of Gairigaon, Nepal on Wednesday, 16 February 2005...

...A Korean woman carries a bouquet of yellow flowers down the escalator into the Pyongyang metro subway, North Korea on 24 February 2008...

...Tomas van Houtryve winner of the 2012 POYi World Understanding Award, with this amazing series of images...

...It's a pity about the title though, since a communist society is a classless 'stateless' society the complete polar opposite to the totalitarian states in the series. I know people would say this is nit-picking since these countries are run or highly influenced in the case of Nepal, by their respective Communist Parties; thus making the use of the word appropriate.

I think that when dealing with such complex issues our use of language is very important...communism has never existed, I think the use of the term 'state socialism' would be far more beneficial in terms of improving people's understanding of the vast political spectrum.

Other than that overall it's a great series, which some fantastic images. Check out the rest here...

Strange how nearly all of the winning images are of one kind of a disaster or another. Is this a true reflection of how the world really is? Harsh, cold and unfeeling?

I really admire the kind of people that  get themselves into these kinds of situations, people that are willing to risk life and limb in order to tell the stories, of those that can't. I can't help but think of Tim Hetheringham who unfortunately paid the ultimate price trying to get us to listen.

"There is a political situation or a war or catastrophe, I go there to try to , I make pictures to try to understand what is happening there...if you look at the pictures and say there's no hope then I'm..."
- Tim Hetheringham (Diary)

‘Diary’ is a highly personal and experimental film that expresses the subjective experience of my work, and was made as an attempt to locate myself after ten years of reporting. It’s a kaleidoscope of images that link our western reality to the seemingly distant worlds we see in the media.”

"
"The images in...Of Falling & Floating...are created by the artist using a process which combines painstaking hand-crafted techniques with the latest digital imagery technology. Gowin collects amateur photographs through the internet and collages them in multiple layers before printing small paper negatives which are cut by hand and then scanned, causing the paper fibers to become a part of the final distressed image. The photographs appear to be both old and new, confusing to the eye and yet hauntingly familiar."
